Joshua Slocum

Joshua Slocum was the first person to sail single-handedly around the world. His journey started from Gloucester, MA on May 7, 1895, taking him over 46,000 nautical miles around the globe and ending in Newport, RI on June 27, 1898.

The Spray, a 36 foot sloop, was a gift from Captain Ebenezer Pierce which after a thirteen month rebuild, Joshua would sail single-handedly around the world.

Joshua wrote a book documenting his single-handed sailing adventure, Sailing Alone Around the World, which was first published in 1901. The book detailed his journey, dates, places, the people and stories along the way.

Blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum all have what is called a genesis block. A genesis block is the very first block that is minted (created) on any blockchain. In the case of Bitcoin, it is a hard-coded block with the text ‘The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.’ Some believe this secret message to be the original mission statement of Bitcoin as it was first released around the financial crisis in 2008-2009.

To honor Joshua Slocum and the history and importance of his single-handed sail around the world, we created a Trusted Sailing Resume from the details Joshua provided in his book. Joshua’s Trusted Sailing Resume exclusively covers his single-handed sail around the world as detailed in his book. We thought it fitting and appropriate that the underlying logbook transactions that make up Joshua’s Trusted Sailing Resume form the genesis block of the Sailing Resume Blockchain. No other transactions from any users, including the founder of Charter Rode, are included in this block. It will forever be only Joshua’s historic trip, which we believe makes the perfect genesis block for the Sailing Resume Blockchain.

All the raw transaction data on the Sailing Resume Blockchain is also human readable JSON. This includes excerpts from Joshua’s book detailing each leg of his trip logged as notes on each transaction in his Trusted Sailing Resume.

We created a non-fungible token (NFT) from the raw JSON data of the Sailing Resume Blockchain genesis block. There is, and only ever will be, a single NFT that has been created by Charter Rode of the Sailing Resume Blockchain genesis block. The original wallet address that minted this NFT was included in a comment by the founder of Charter Rode on his Trusted Sailing Resume. This transaction is included in the second block of the Sailing Resume Blockchain ensuring the uniqueness of the NFT.

Upon the first sale of the Joshua Slocum Charter Rode NFT, a single full-sized print, signed by the founder of Charter Rode, will accompany the NFT. The physical print measures 100 inches by 56 inches. Whomever owns the Joshua Slocum Charter Rode NFT, also owns this official signed print.
